Job Description

Wage Ranges from $13.00 to $15.00 per hour dependent on experience. Laborers have general responsibility to provide support and assistance to the other skilled crafts working on the project. Laborers employed by Hensel Phelps provide support for the form carpenters and for the concrete operation in general, ironworkers/rodbusters involved in installing reinforcing steel, and masons involved in the installation of block and brickwork. Laborers have many responsibilities relating to the concrete operations. Preparation of areas for the placement of concrete involves final excavation of dirt and rock and fine grading for floor slabs. This work involves shoveling for extended periods and requires the employee to be bent over for much of the workday preparing ground areas. During the assembly of concrete forms, laborers are required to lift form panels and assist in their placement. During the concrete pouring operation, laborers position themselves on the top of the forms and handle the concrete bucket suspended from a crane that transfers the concrete from the concrete truck to the placement area. After the concrete is poured from the bucket, laborers muck the concrete in slabs to spread it evenly. Laborers also place vibrators up to 20 feet in length and weighing approximately 40 pounds or more in the wall forms to evenly disburse the concrete. After the concrete has cured, the laborers assist in stripping the concrete forms and transporting them for storage. Also, laborers perform concrete jackhammering operations using jackhammers. During the concrete finish operation, laborers assist concrete finishers in moving power trowels and power screeds used to finish the concrete surface. Laborers also work in support of block masons installing masonry work. In this role, laborers handle bags of cement, lime, sand, and grout. Laborers are also responsible for transporting and stocking blocks and bricks to be installed by the masons. During the door and door frame installation phase of the project, laborers also assist carpenters in handling door frames. This entails transporting the door frames from the storage area to the work areas and stacking the door frames where needed. Laborers also assist in setting door frames and doors. In addition to supporting the other crafts on the project, laborers have general cleanup and supply duties on the jobsite. These include handling 55-gallon drums of form oil and other solvents used during the course of the project. Laborers are responsible for general cleanup, sweeping, and removal of debris throughout the project. Lifting and moving portable generators and sanilets as well as other miscellaneous construction material, equipment, and debris as needed throughout the project are also the responsibility of laborers. Essential job functions include: + Lift and carry objects and materials of various weights up to 100 pounds. + Repetitive climbing, stooping, kneeling, bending, and reaching over head. + Use of hands and wrists with various tools. + Prolonged use of jackhammer and pavement breaker. + Climb ladders multiple times a day. + Push and pull objects up to 100 pounds (sometimes suspended from hoist). + Use of wheelbarrows and brooms. + Repetitive use of hands and wrists using power, rotational, and vibration tools. + Tolerate legally permissible exposure to dusts and chemicals, such as cement dust, solvents, and curing compounds. + Must be able to hear commands from supervisors and back-up safety alarms on equipment.
