Job Description

**Position Summary** Under immediate supervision, fabricates and assembles structural metal products, such as framework or shells for machinery according to job order, verbal instructions, and blueprints. Creates layout and outlines sequence of operations, applying knowledge of trigonometry, stock allowances for thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and physical properties of the metal. Locates and marks bending and cutting lines onto workpieces. Sets up and operates fabrication machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, and drill presses. **Essential Functions of the Job:** + Set up, operate, or tend machines to saw, cut, shear, slit, punch, crimp, notch, bend or straighten metal material. + Moves material and workpiece manually, by hoist or forklift and secures workpiece in fixture or table using clamps and wrenches. + Aligns and verifies positioning using measuring instruments to determine reference points and compute layout dimensions. + Examine completed workpieces for defects, such as chipped edges or marred surfaces and sort defective pieces according to types of flaws. + Uses hand tools to grind, sand, clean, or polish objects or parts to correct defects or to prepare surfaces for further finishing. + May create layout and outline sequence of operations, applying knowledge of stock allowances for thickness, trigonometry, and physical properties of metal necessary for the fabrication process. + May assist with the setup and operation of assigned fabrication machines (i.e., saws, brakes, shears, punch presses, ironworkers, and roll formers) to cut and shape components to specified dimensions. + Inspect and adjust crane mechanisms or lifting accessories to prevent malfunctions or damage. + Operates vehicles, mechanized devices, or equipment, which includes running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts and passenger vehicles. + May be assigned additional responsibilities as necessary to support the manufacturing and fabrication operations. **Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:** + Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. + Knowledge of basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications. + Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods. + Read and interpret blueprints and fabrication instructions to determine work requirements. + Able to use hand and power tools. + Able to perform measurements using a tape measure, protractor, square, calipers, and other measuring devices. + Able to operate a manual crane hoist, forklift, and hand truck. + Effective communication skills to provide information to supervisors, leads, co-workers, and subordinates, in written form or in person. + Able to wear personal protective equipment. + Able to work overtime and including weekends as production schedules dictate. **Education and Experience:** High school diploma or GED preferred. Minimum of 1-2 year(s) of previous metal fabrication experience, preferably in a metal manufacturing production environment. **Working Conditions:** The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Work performed in a non-climate controlled metal manufacturing production environment, with frequent standing, twisting, bending, stooping, and climbing in and around metal fabricated parts. Frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling of 40 pounds alone and 100> pounds with assistance. Requires sufficient manual dexterity and visual acuity to identify required material and operate production fabrication equipment (i.e., handtools, power tools, hand trucks, etc.).
