Under general supervision, to apply protective and decorative coatings to building interiors and exteriors and to other structures; and to perform related work as required.

Examples of Duties
+ Brush or spray paints interior and exterior surfaces from ground level or from ladder or swing stage.
+ Applies water or oil base paints, enamels, varnishes, rustproof agents and coatings onto drywall, plaster, metal, wood stock and fabricated items.
+ Enamels, varnishes and grains woodwork, walls, floors and ironwork.
+ Fills, stains, color varnishes, lacquers and polishes furniture.
+ Mixes paints, sizes, varnishes, enamels, lacquers, calcimines or other washes, and paint and varnish removers.
+ Matches colors and touches up old work.
+ Paints and varnishes metal surfaces to include application of base coat, color coats and finish varnish.
+ Scrapes, sandpapers, burns, dissolves, and washes surfaces remove old paint, varnish and other coverings, and otherwise prepares surfaces for painting, staining varnishing and finishing.
+ Cuts and replaces window and door panes.
+ Makes minor adjustments and repairs to windows, doors window frames, siding and eaves.
+ Patch plasters walls and caulks.
+ High School Graduation or G.E.D. (General Educational Development) equivalent.
+ One (1) year of residential and commercial painting experience.
+ Graduation from a trade or vocational school.
+ Completion of an apprenticeship program in the trade.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Knowledge of the methods used in preparing and mixing paints, sizes, varnishes, enamels, lacquers, washes and paint, varnish and other surface covering removal.
+ Knowledge of the use of pigment, dryers and other vehicles for various surfaces and conditions.
+ Skill in application of paint in an economical manner.
+ Skill in use of the tools of the trade.
+ Ability to mix paints and match colors.
+ Ability to operate a spray paint assembly.
+ Ability to work from ladders and swing stage.
+ Ability to display resourcefulness in handling difficult problems in mixing and applying protective and decorative coatings.
+ Ability to prepare and maintain records of work activities.
+ Ability to display willingness to learn and perform any assigned task.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements:
Employees in this class will be required to provide the tools necessary to perform the work assigned, and will be required, when necessary, to operate a motor vehicle; valid State of Michigan Driver License required.
Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.
The employee generally engages in light to strenuous physical activity which may include operating machinery, motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and using tools for an extended period of time. The employee is expected to move about and ascend/descend (e.g. stairs, ladders, trees etc.) to accomplish tasks. The employee must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry up to (50) pounds. The employee must be also be able to pass a practical wall repair test at our facility.
Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments with potential exposure to conditions which may include fumes, extreme heat and cold, wetness, loud noise, dust, inclement weather and hazardous chemicals. Some work requires travel to meetings, conferences, and other work sites with exposure to seasonal weather conditions.

City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
• Completion of thirty (30) years of service; - At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or - At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service. (In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply); • An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service; • Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
